Why Learn from WGM Sabina Foisor

Woman Grandmaster Sabina Foisor brings decades of international chess experience, a deep passion for teaching, and a strong academic foundation to Evolution Chess Academy.

Born into a chess family in Romania, Sabina was raised in an environment of strategy, study, and competition—both of her parents were International Masters. She learned chess at age four and quickly rose through the ranks, winning numerous national and European youth titles. In 2007, she earned the title of Woman Grandmaster and shortly after accepted a full scholarship to study in the United States.

Sabina holds a BA in Modern Languages and Linguistics and a Master's in Intercultural Communication from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She has proudly represented the United States at five Women's Chess Olympiads and four Women's World Team Championships. Her most celebrated achievement came in 2017, when she won the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship, a powerful and emotional victory that highlighted her resilience and strength.

  • Sabina brings is the elite competitive experience having been coaches by two strong International Masters, having won numerous national and international medals while youth , having represented the US at 5 chess Olympiads and 4 Women's World Championships  and lastly winning the US Women's Championship in 2017. Sabina knows what it takes to compete and how to deal with wins, but also defeats.

  • She is very passionate when it comes to helping her students, having over a decade of coaching experience. Her lessons emphasize deep understanding of middlegames, critical thinking, and emotional growth alongside endgame skills.

  • She co-authored the book "Sherlock’s Method" aongside GM Elshan Moradiabadi, a practical training manual for club players seeking to level up their competitive preparation.

  • For the past few years, Sabina has been a journalist for the Saint Louis Chess Club and  main commentator for US Chess for various National Events

  • In the last year, Sabina has started recording a podcast for US Chess called "Class in Session" — a chess podcast that spotlights women who are using chess not just as a game, but as a powerful tool for empowerment, education, and change. These women are breaking barriers, building confidence, and inspiring the next generation — one move at a time.

Sabina’s teaching style is patient, thoughtful, and personalized. She encourages students to reflect not only on their mistakes but also on their victories—believing that true improvement comes from analyzing every aspect of one’s game. Her group classes are structured, supportive, and inspiring, offering serious training in an engaging and community-driven environment.
